Some lineages of Tai Chi still value self defence training, including the technical and conditioning aspects. Skill training was traditionally done using San Shou exercises, which are partnered drills designed to embody key movements and ideas.

If you do enough drilling the techniques become instinctive responses. In this video you can see a practice session using 2 of the 48 San Shou drills, practiced in 30 min sections.
